Dear Athens-Clark County Transportation & Public Works,
I’m a tourist who visited Athens, Georgia yesterday. I’m writing to you today regarding the Audible Pedestrian Signal that’s located at the intersection of Baxter Street and Alps Road.
As you may be aware, Audible Pedestrian Signals provides guidance in helping pedestrians who are blind or have low vision to cross the street safely. It even helps our senior citizens who live, visit, or work in the area.
The issue that I have with the Audible Pedestrian Signal at the intersection of Baxter Street and Alps Road is that the volume is too low. While I can hear the APS when I’m next to it, crossing the street in the crosswalk was a different story. You cannot hear the countdown at all, especially if there’s a lot of traffic when lots of vehicles are passing by. This is concerning, especially when the countdown ends before the pedestrian makes it to the other side. Having the volume set to a loud and appropriate level will ensure that the pedestrian will hear the countdown and will make sure that they’re across the street safely.
If you have any questions, please let me know by replying to this email. I’d be happy to arrange a visit to Athens in the future so I can show you what I’m talking about.
Thank you.
Respectfully,
