WASHINGTON, D.C. – Armando Vias, a disability rights advocate and representing as the Chair of the Houston County Democratic Committee – Disability Caucus and the Chair of the Young Democrats of Georgia’s Disability Caucus has released the following statement after the United States Senate voted to pass the One Big Beautiful Bill Act on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.

While he’s very disappointed that this was passed in the Senate, this fight isn’t over yet, and there’s still time since it’s going back to the House of Representatives for a final vote that’ll take place very soon.

As Chairman of Houston County and YDG’s Disability Caucuses, I’m very disappointed that the One Big Beautiful Bill Act was passed in the Senate. This bill will have major consequences, especially for people living with disabilities. It’ll cut $930 billion in Medicaid and leave vulnerable Americans hungry due to spending cuts to SNAP nutritional assistance. Also, f this bill passes the house, Home and Community Based Services (HCBS), access to assistive technology and affordable healthcare will be affected.

For people living with disabilities like myself, this will increase institutionalization, hunger, and preventable death due to out-of-pocket medical costs that Medicaid may not cover when it was covered before, such as medical appointments. This will also affect families, older adults, and children.

I encourage you to call your House of Representatives to oppose the passage of this bill.

The Senate voted 51-50, with the Vice President of the United States breaking the 50-50 vote. If you haven’t already contacted your House of Representative, be sure to reach out to them as soon as possible.
