MACON, GA. – Armando Vias, a community advocate championing equal access for everyone and representing as the Chair of the Houston County, Georgia Democratic Committee – Disability Caucus and the Chair of the Young Democrats of Georgia’s Disability Caucus has released the following statement after Commissioners in Macon-Bibb County recently approved to allocate $50,000 in funding to purchase 10 Audible Pedestrian Signals (APS) at the Macon-Bibb County Commissioners Meeting on Tuesday, December 18, 2025.
These audible pedestrian signals help blind and low vision pedestrians to cross the streets safely. While these signals doesn’t replace the orientation and mobility skills that they were taught, these signals will help them, especially if there’s a lot of traffic.
More Audible Pedestrian Signals is finally coming to Macon, Georgia. This will make Downtown Macon more accessible to blind and low vision pedestrians to cross streets safely and even our senior citizens who live and work in the area.
I’d like to thank the Macon-Bibb County Commissioners for finally taking the next step in making downtown Macon more accessible and more safer for pedestrians that work and attend events in downtown Macon. While there’s only 10 Audible Pedestrian Signals that’s being implemented, I’d like to see more of these signals across Macon-Bibb County.
Since I’m not a resident of Macon-Bibb County, I hope that I can contribute to making sure that the city/county is accessible to all citizens who live and/or work.
Macon, Georgia already has only one Audible Pedestrian Signal at the moment, located on Vineville Avenue near the Georgia Academy for The Blind. As for other places in Middle Georgia, the City of Warner Robins has one on Kimberly Road and Russell Parkway.
